As of this article no formal study has been conducted on how CBD affects dogs positively or negatively. What researchers do understand is that cannabinoids interact with a pet’s cannabinoid receptors located within the central and peripheral nervous systems. The endocannabinoid system helps maintain balance, supports body function and promotes health.
CBD is not psychoactive. Unlike tetrahydrocannabidiol or THC, cannabidiol or CBD will not get your pet stoned.
Without scientific data on the potential side effects of CBD oil for dogs, we are aware of potential side effects based on how CBD can affects humans. Dogs do have more cannabinoid receptors than humans and may be more sensitive to the effects of CBD, or any cannabinoid.
- Dry mouth: CBD may decrease the production of saliva. Dogs would want to drink more water.
- Lowered blood pressure: Very high doses of CBD have shown to cause temporary drops in blood pressure.
- Drowsiness: The calming effect of CBD can cause slight drowsiness, especially when used in large doses.
No documented allergic reactions with hemp or CBD has ever been documented in both animals and humans. It is still a good idea to consult your veterinarian before beginning the use of any supplement.
