Why Do Dogs Stay “High” Longer Than Humans?

Why dogs stay high longer than any other mammal after cannabis ingestion - Hemp Well

Many pet parents are surprised to learn that dogs can be far more sensitive to THC (the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis) than humans. Two likely reasons are: (1) dogs have a dense distribution of cannabinoid receptors, and (2) they can metabolize THC more slowly. Together, that can mean stronger effects that last longer.

THC Sensitivity in Dogs

  • More receptors, more effect: Dogs’ endocannabinoid systems are robust, so THC may bind more widely and intensely than in many other mammals.
  • Slower THC clearance: Some dogs may process THC more slowly, leading to a longer duration of signs after exposure.

Bottom line: Even a small amount of THC can be overwhelming to a dog. Keep cannabis products locked away and never offer THC to pets.

How Long Will My Dog Be High?

Duration varies by dose, product type, and your dog’s size and metabolism. Signs can persist for 12–24 hours (and occasionally longer with large exposures or edibles with fats that slow digestion).

Signs Your Dog May Have Ingested THC

  • Wobbly gait (ataxia), lethargy, disorientation
  • Dribbling urine, dilated pupils, vocalization
  • Hypersensitivity to touch/sound, tremors, vomiting
  • In severe cases: lowered body temperature, bradycardia

What To Do If Your Dog Got Into Cannabis

  1. Call your veterinarian immediately. Be honest about what was ingested (flower, edible, vape oil, etc.).
  2. Do not induce vomiting unless your vet instructs you to do so.
  3. Create a calm, safe space: dim lights, quiet room, soft bedding.
  4. Offer fresh water and monitor for vomiting, worsening wobbliness, or temperature changes.
  5. Seek urgent care if your dog is very sedated, unable to stand, or showing concerning signs.

Important: THC intoxication is usually manageable with supportive veterinary care, but prompt guidance is key.
