Regulatory Risks From Selling Pet Products At Cannabis Stores

Any one working inside the cannabis industry is already aware the mountain of regulatory concerns that need to be addressed on a daily basis. Proper packaging, product testing, tracking, ID checks, and government fees are commonplace practices for cannabis workers. Most of the industry goes above board to ensure that their customers health and their company’s business reputation are both safe.

After visiting several online stores for local dispensaries in my area I noticed they all have products containing hemp derived CBD for pets. Why not? These products are sold everywhere from pet stores to gas stations. Over 60% of dispensary customers own a pet and they are already cool with cannabis use. What’s good for me is good for my pet (less the THC of course).

As industry veterans in both the cannabis and pet industries it is important to note that food and supplements for pets have more regulatory red tape than supplements and food intended for us humans. Pet products containing the words Treat, Biscuit, Coat or Delicious  (as example) and with the active ingredient being hemp (CBD) are expressly forbidden for sale into the marketplace by AAFCO. Additionally, products containing claims like Cure, Treat, Cancer, etc are forbidden by the FDA.

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies. Members are charged by their local, state or federal laws to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies.

Every single product that we reviewed on dispensary websites violates established AAFCO guidelines and leaves dispensary owners susceptible to product recalls, stop sale orders, fines or greater interference.

Since 2015, Hemp Well has offered quality, hemp derived supplements for pets. Today, our products are sold through thousands of US retailers and in all 50 states. As members of the National Animal Supplement Council and with almost a decade of industry experience, we have worked in tandem with the FDA and AAFCO to ensure not only great quality and transparency, but also to ensure that our retailers are offering compliant products and meeting well established labelling requirements. To date, and unlike the majority of our competition, our products have never been red tagged or pulled from shelves.

We believe that our pets deserve the best and we have laid the groundwork for our retail partners (like you) to  help pets, compliantly. Reach out to learn more or to start offering Hemp Well products in your medical or recreational cannabis store. https://partners.hempwell.com/start
