Dogs have an incredible sense of hearing, which makes them very sensitive to loud noises. Fireworks are one of the most common things that can trigger a dog's fear response. If your dog is scared of fireworks, there are a few things you can do to help them feel more comfortable.
You be cool, they be cool
Rule #1, stay calm yourself. Dogs can pick up on our emotions and if you're feeling anxious, they will likely mirror that feeling.
Create a Safe Space
Get creative and try to create a safe space for them to retreat to when the fireworks start. This could be a crate or a quiet room in your house where they feel comfortable.
Desensitization Training
You can also try desensitization training, which involves exposing your dog to the sound of fireworks at a low volume until they become accustomed to it.
Consider organic supplements to calm your dog
If your dog is experiencing anxiety that goes beyond the fireworks season, there are a number of supplements that can help relieve their stress. With your veterinarian’s approval, you can try giving your dog valerian, hemp, chamomile or kava to calm their body.
