Hemp, what is it good for? (besides CBD)

Hemp derived CBD is everywhere. It is in our supplements and our pets too, and for good reason. The myriad of benefits to health from Cannabidiol or CBD use is proven. But what else can hemp deliver?

Hemp delivers the optimal ration of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids. All mammals need inflammation (omega 6) and deflammation (omega 3) and in the ideal ratio. Unlike cannabinoids, our bodies do not produce fatty acids, they must be derived from our diet (or supplements)

Better than other oils, hemp (cannabis) has the optimal ratio of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

Can Pets Take CBD Oil Made for Humans?

Maybe you are already taking CBD (cannabidiol) yourself and thought about supplementing your pet’s health as well. Why not, right? After all we all have endocannabinoid receptors. All of our bodies produce cannabinoids, naturally. What should you consider before giving your pet a human CBD product?

High Amounts of CBD

Often, human CBD supplements promote high levels of CBD. Dogs, for example, have far more cannabinoid receptors than humans. Too much CBD can be wasteful, and too much CBD can have an adverse effect in the production of natural cannabinoids in both of your bodies.

Does it have THC?

Sometimes THC can be good, and sometimes it may be bad. We already know that dogs have more cannabinoid receptors than us, so THC, the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant, might make your dog “really stoned’. Accounts of dogs staying high for longer than 24 hours are common after eating pot-laced cookies or your bag of grass.

What about terpenes?

Terpenes are found in lots of things in nature. Terpenes give pine trees their pine smell, oranges their aroma, and cannabis’ distinctive odor. Terpenes are touted and delivered in higher levels with many human grade products. Terpenes, at certain levels, can be harmful to dogs and even toxic to cats.

Fillers and Flavors

Lots of those human marketed CBD products use cheap fillers and flavors that are not optimal for your pet. In addition, just because you enjoy the cinnamon infused taste, will they?

What Pet Parents Can Discover

Positive for CBD: What Would Happen To Kentucky Derby Horse and Jockey Winner?

This year at the Kentucky Derby something unprecedented happened. The winner was disqualified twenty minutes after the race. Gamblers lost millions and a long-shot named Country House was declared the new winner.

Maximum Security was found in violation of established rules. Basically Maximum Security was a road raged driver, cutting off others, not staying in his lane and menacing to at least 7 other horses in the Derby.

What if the winning Horse tested positive for Cannabis?

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission defines CBD (the non-psychoactive substance in cannabis) a Class B drug. Horsemen with a Class B offense are subject to suspension of up to 60 days and a fine of up to $1,000 for first offense. It’s unlikely that CBD will show up in a drug test. With that said, it is still a violation and may disqualify your recent victory.

The commission also finds THC (the psychoactive substance in cannabis) a Class A drug and comes with a three-year suspension and a fine of $5,000 to $10,000 for first offenders. Any levels of THC will show in a drug test. *Full spectrum CBD or hemp oils have trace amounts of THC.

What about the jockey?

Jockeys are subject to random drug testing just like other professionals. A positive test for THC would disqualify the rider. CBD oil is a bit trickier. Does the CBD extract contain a full spectrum including even trace amounts of THC? It is important for you and your horse to avoid THC, and maybe even CBD, if you want to win the Kentucky Derby under existing laws.

*Hemp Well products contain no levels of THC.

Hemp Omegas For Horses

Hemp health for horses

Hemp has a better fatty acid ratio than fish, krill, flax, coconut and MCT oils. Hemp is a complete protein with all 20 essential amino acids, no concern over sustainability, mercury or smell. It also helps with cellular integrity. Omegas lubricate from inside out.

Hemp oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their health benefits. Supplementing omega-3 fatty acids also helps balance the ratio of omega-3s and omega-6s in a horse’s diet and facilitates absorption of various fat-soluble vitamins, including A, D, E, and K. The nervous system of both mature and immature horses also benefits from omega-3s, as supplementation decreases stress, improves learning and cognition, and staves off the development of stereotypic behaviors, such as cribbing,

Things To Know Before Giving Your Pet CBD

Understand these 5 things before you give your pet a CBD product.

Is THC Harmful To Your Pet?

THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is considered to be the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. There are 400 other compounds in the cannabis plant that offer benefits without the ‘high’.

Does THC provide significant health benefits?

Yes. It may assist with a whole variety of things from pain relief, appetite stimulation and nerve disorders. But, I would not advise you to give your pet THC. Dogs and cats have more cannabinoid receptors than we do. They are extremely sensitive to THC and will likely suffer from what veterinarians describe as “marijuana poisoning.”

Pets will metabolize THC a lot slower than we can. Our three hour marijuana buzz can last up to 24 hours on your pet.

Some products marketed for humans will contain both THC and CBD. While this is a great alternative for us, I would stay away from any levels of THC for your best friend. Until further studies are conducted regarding the safe use of THC in pets, a CBD or cannabinoid rich hemp product may be the best alternative given the research already put forward.

Hemp Well products contain 0% THC and are rich in cannabinoids, like CBD. Hemp Well products will never get your pet high.

What Are Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods, such as fish, hemp (cannabis) and flaxseed, and more commonly found in dietary supplements like fish oil, hemp oil and flaxseed oil..

Their are three main omega-3 fatty acids; alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). ALA is most common in plant oils such as flaxseed, hemp, soybean, and canola oils. DHA and EPA are found in fish and other seafood.

ALA is an essential fatty acid, meaning that your pet’s body cannot make it, it must be consumed from food or supplements. An animal’s body can convert some ALA into EPA and then to DHA in very small amounts. Therefore, getting EPA and DHA from foods (and dietary supplements if necessary) is the best way to increase levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the body.

Omega-3s are important components of the membranes that surround each cell in the body. DHA levels are especially high in retina (eye), brain, and sperm cells. Omega-3s also provide calories to give animals energy and have many functions in your heart, blood vessels, lungs, immune system, and endocrine system (the network of hormone-producing glands).

Our everyday Hemp Omegas products are a great start to supplementing your pets Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acid intake.
